BAT DAY

1968, The Yankees Stadium in the Bronx Bat Day.

In 1968,
In the heat of summer,
In the Bronx,
The Yankees gave us Baseball Bats,
As we walked thru the gate.
Mine had Micky Mantle’s signature embossed on the end of it
Over 50,000 people attended that day.
The summer of love had passed,
There were riots in hundreds of cities,
Yet there we all were,
Sitting together,
Watching a mediocre team,
Going nowhere.
When asked,
We all lifted our bats in joy,
For the group photo.
Who knows what held us all together,
And kept us from hitting each other,
But something did.
