THE COFFEE CUP

Black Ceramic Cup With Smoke Above

The coffee cup rested on the table,
Between the two of them,
Letting off steam.
Rising in air than vanishing.
She ordered it.
Why?
No idea.
She’d had enough.
Maybe they needed a reason to be here,
Now,
Doing this,
Whatever this was that they were doing,
Together,
Sitting.
Recollecting.
Thinking ahead.
Maybe it was for the kids?
No.
Just sit.
Wait.
Words will come.
The coffee cup rested on the table
While he sat there watching her,
Rejecting each thought and their words,
One by one.
Sunlight thru the steam now,
Making him imagine things that weren’t there,
Just the same,
She looked at him,
And found those corners
Where his mind would go,
“Come back”
“Hm?”
“Nothing”
The hissing of steamed milk, warmth and comfort.
