OUR CAMPGROUND

August 6, 2021
I love camp.
There is a gravel bar along a river
Where we go swimming.
There is deadly algae in the water.
We have scorpions.
And sometimes meth addicts wander into our campground.
Sometimes there are gunshots.
On hot days,
The heat under the redwood canopy
Feels like an oven.
We move slowly and soak our shirts in water
To stay cool.
I hate camp.
The sunlight thru the trees
In the morning
Looks like heaven is close.
Or here already.
Families have their own campsites.
Each is similar but also unique.
At night we gather at the bonfire and sing.
In the morning,
People do their own thing,
Training, swimming, running, yoga
Or just sitting by a small fire
Sometimes we all have breakfast together,
Bacon, Pancakes, eggs, juice, coffee,
And chatter about things important
And sometimes not so,
What’s best,
Or worst,
We do it every year.
Year after year.
