THE SPARK OF LIFE

If science were really science
you could point to the thing itself,
and that would be enough,
to reveal what you meant.
But you can’t.
No one can.
You need metaphor,
and other forms of speech,
that help you say what you mean.
You mention one thing
but mean another.
Imagination is everything.
Creating something,
like science,
and math,
is only possible with poetry.
In the beginning was the word.
So before you stop teaching poetry in school,
Remember:
Coaxing and coaching imagination into form,
Is the only reason for schools at all.
