70 and 34,
Your birthday, our anniversary.
Years that went by,
Filled with things that made up our lives,
A glass of wine here,
A digging in the dirt there,
Christmas’s spent hugging and eating,
Laughing and singing,
Holidays of thanks and giving.
You’d think we’d all had enough of each other.
But our inclination is to stick together.
Whether it is blood or vows,
Or something ineffable we rely on,
We turn the calendar again,
Looking forward to the next occasion,
To gather and celebrate,
In the woods perhaps,
Or our homes, or a favorite spot.
This union of family and lives
Forever aware of how fleeting it can be
But knowing there is nothing better on this earth
Than these words:
Together, family, and love.
