BIRTHDAYS

“It’s an adventure!”
She says,
As she opens the door to our cabin
And is overcome with 98 degrees
Of trapped heat from inside the rooms.
We reminisce,
About that restaurant in Santa Barbara,
Or that time we took the kids to Monterey,
With Grandpa.
Shared glimpses of memory
That make up a lifetime
Of birthdays spent together
Wondering about each other,
Our family,
And what will come next.
I suppose it’s in the way of things,
This being together after so much,
Passing time and laughter,
I can’t really recall,
How it all got started.
But there we both were,
Younger.
With an idea in our heads,
About what we could do with love,
Together.
