FAMILY HISTORY

Things happen in a family,
You think, this is as bad as it could ever be.
Then it gets worse,
But then you find in it,
Things you didn’t know,
Like you still get up in the morning,
And hear your mom making breakfast downstairs,
Despite what you thought was happening.
Then, somehow, the thing shifts again,
And things seem different,
But you hardly notice what’s happened,
You just keep going.
Losing concern for the light at the end of the tunnel,
You just begin valuing things like rest,
Or how the sunlight looks at night or early morning,
Or what the laughter feels like when you are all laughing,
And you know you’ve been through it all.
It’s over.
And now, somehow you are standing
On the other side of it, despite what you thought.
You feel love in all its shapes
And stand there amazed
At what has transpired.
