HUG

The Scottish philosopher,
David Hume, said something like,
We reason in service of our emotions.
Of course.
We already know this.
Anyone who has sat in a forest at sunrise,
Or been still beside a body of water,
Or tried to understand the biochemistry
Behind a hug,
Could tell you this.
We don’t REALLY know why it’s great,
We just know that it is.
Reason, logic, rationality,
Everything we have come to “know”,
Really,
Comes about from the same source.
We feel something.
First,
Then we try and determine where it came from and why,
Or maybe we invent a practice that says,
Just let it be.
Either way,
We really know only one thing,
That is,
When we feel something,
We know what it is,
To be human.
