I’M A WRITER

When I first realized I wanted to be a writer or a poet or a singer song writer or some such thing I started getting into arguments with my mom (who was a poet) about what I found valuable in the lyrics of some of the song writers I was listening to.
She felt it was nice that I was interested in words but felt what I was listening to was somewhat limited.
She talked about poets like W.H. Auden. Being in my late teens and early twenties I refused to go and look for myself.
But now, things are different –
All I have is a voice
To undo the folded lie,
The romantic lie in the brain
Of the sensual man-in-the-street
And the lie of Authority
Whose buildings grope the sky:
There is no such thing as the State
And no one exists alone;
Hunger allows no choice
To the citizen or the police;
We must love one another or die.
