OLD FRIENDS

What is it that binds us?
Old friends over dinner and wine,
Talking thoughtfully,
About things important
Like God, religion, religious practice
The value of being together,
And unrestricted,
Universal love.
How we came to be in the world.
And how others,
Our children,
May grow into it.
Laughter,
An uneasy tension
With no, real, tangible release point.
We move past these things,
Into subjects easier to digest,
That allows us room to breathe.
Just to be here.
Grateful for these minutes,
Together,
Without ambition
And yet a shared sense
Of small victory.
As in,
Yay!
We made it this far
Wasn’t that all wonderful!
