PRACTICE

The Anatomy of Melancholy was a deep dive into depression,
Written by Robert Burton in the 1600s.
Despite his success in life,
He found himself, from time to time,
Deeply depressed,
And wondered,
Do all of us feel this way?
It was a tough time,
There was plenty to be depressed about.
Back then,
Humans were being human,
Struggling to understand,
This funny place we occupy,
Between the physical and the not so much,
Where we intuit something else,
And seek ideas that will unify us,
In our efforts to find paradise amongst ourselves.
The ineffable offered to us as a possibility,
With access to it thru practice, discipline, work,
Things so often misunderstood,
That we’ve forgotten,
They’ve been given to us for our salvation.
