PRAYER

PRAYER

At some point in his later years,
My dad started sending us a prayer every Thanksgiving.
It was The General Thanksgiving prayer from the book of Common Prayer.
At first it would come in letter form,
Carefully printed and mailed to each of us.
Eventually it came over the internet.
At the end of the letter or email he would include information regarding how the prayer was printed.
Meaning, the typeface used and then eventually, also, the specific type of computer used.
In this case it was Palatino.
He would include this quote about the typeface from a book called, The Elements of Typographic Style by Robert Bringhurst
“Palatino is a lyrical modernist face with a neohumanist architecture, which is to say that it is written, not drawn, and that it is based on Renaissance forms. It was created in 1948 by Herman Zapf”
It was an interesting expression of things that I think he felt were important and lasting.
I was always a bit mystified by his very conscious inclusion of the typeface and later the computer.
But maybe he wanted us to know of his love and gratitude for this life,
And for each of us,
And to remind us that the form our gratitude takes is important,
Always.
