THE SECULARITY

Secular at last,
We scramble around wildly,
Looking for somewhere to place our faith,
Art, family, community, things, athletics
Our team, town, state, country.
We build things – no longer churches –
Houses, relationships, technology, a following,
In the hope others will join us.
But what of doing what some have done for a thousand years or more?
Like sitting quietly and learning how to breathe properly,
Like prayer,
Are we smarter than that now? Is that it?
We have science.
But what of this other method of investigation, exploration
And revelation,
The quiet, slow consideration of what we cannot see,
The repetition of words and ritual designed to make us consider,
What we know but cannot easily speak to,
The looking into our hearts and minds,
For ourselves.
It’s messy and tangled and never what we expect,
But then, again, so is love.
