WE FIND LOVE

Once
A long time ago,
I rode in the backseat
Of our red Volvo sedan
While mom drove you to class.
So you could dance.
Day after day.
Everyday,
After school,
Or before dinner,
We were going somewhere.
Around the corner
Or a few towns over.
I don’t remember
If we talked much.
Maybe we did,
Maybe there were complaints and such,
But I don’t remember it that way.
We just did it.
We were not unhappy.
It seemed like the natural order of things.
You, mom, me and dancing.
This is what people do.
Later,
We are older, much older…
You wake up at 5 a.m.,
While it is still dark outside,
You make coffee, check the traffic,
Pack some granola for breakfast
And head out.
To teach people how to dance.
The look on your face
Has not changed much.
Calm and quiet,
With no reservation,
A sense that,
This is what needs doing right now.
To move
And move well,
With beauty and grace and joy.
To teach others the same and more.
How to become strong,
How to work hard,
How to overcome,
Difficulties they may have inside themselves,
That obstruct them,
From realizing grace
In how they move,
In what they do,
In who they are.
For this is who you are,
Who you have always been.
Grace, joy, beauty
Forged thru effort, will, and persistence
And a reminder that thru faith in these things
We find love.
