JUST ONE THING

“In attempts to understand a thing so simple and so huge
Believed that they were meant to live after the deluge”
– Before The Deluge, Jackson Browne

A piece of cloth or paper,
A splash of color,
Perhaps some stripes and stars,
The cumulative effect being more
Than what is apparent.
A flag.
Such a simple thing,
We’ve been waving them
As far back as the 11th century BC
To identify
“Us”.
A reminder to be united.
To stick together,
In spite of ourselves.
It’s simple really,
Stay together,
Or fall apart.
We humans were meant to be together,
Live, work, eat, laugh, cry, die,
Looking out for one another.
A family, a country, a nation,
A world
But if you step back far enough
It’s really just one thing
That’s it,
Just one thing.
