There we all were,
Sometime in the latter part of the 18th century,
When suddenly,
The Encyclopedia appeared.
“The circle of teachings”.
Taking advantage of the opportunity
To convey advanced ideas,
Many of us had never heard of,
And some of us were worried about,
Diderot gave 26 years of his life,
To share all we knew of ourselves.
And in so doing,
Inflamed the church to fight back.
Riots and censorship ensued,
There must be limits on what we share,
And teach, and when, and most importantly, to whom.
And what of the mysteries of
Faith, hope, love
And all the other unreasoned things we seem to know
In some way or another,
If all this is in a book somewhere,
Or out there in the cloud(s)
What will happen?
God only knows.
