ROUSSEAU

(many thanks to Jacques Barzun and his book from Dawn to Decadence)
Love everyone,
As often as you can.
Pursue the good.
All else,
We know nothing about.
There have been and always will be,
Quarrels and bloodshed,
About things we can never know.
This is the grossest impiety.
Maintain no illusions about human conduct.
The gap between moral intention and performance,
Remains a perpetual challenge to the will.
Find joy where you can,
And seek it out in others.
