ALL YOU HAVE TO DO IS LOOK

“Look at the light”
That’s what he said when I picked him up at the airport outside San Francisco.
“What?”
“The light. It’s different here. Look at it.”
I never really noticed. Maybe a little. But I said, “yeah, I know”.
He was coming from the east coast where things are …what?
Constrained, crowded, old.
The light – he always made me notice things like that,
Like reminding me that even though I thought I was looking I wasn’t.
Not really.
He said quirky things,
And took to wearing a funny hat when he slept.
My friend is a playwright.
Another, an actress, is playing Polonius in Hamlet.
“To thine own self be true”
More wisdom then most of us can muster on a given day.
My brother, a gifted artist turned musician, haha!
My sister a modern dancer believing in the power of moving to make something beautiful,
My son writes songs and knows more about great music than most of us,
And my daughter thinks Jane Austen will speak to high school girls
And makes everything she touches into something beautiful.
My wife, another dancer, can’t go a day without song.
And some days I do some “real” work myself,
With young artists whose hearts and ideas are bigger than any of us.
There is light.
Everywhere.
All you have to do is look.
