STORED SUNLIGHT

redwoods bathe in sunlight

It is a summer’s evening
When we gather.
Seating ourselves around the fire,
staring forward, talking quietly,
of things past or hopes forward.
There is a graceful ease to it,
all of us removed from the need to do anything else.

As it grows dark, we stare deeper,
watching as sparks and sparkles emerge,
from fire made of bits of tree
releasing their stored sunlight,
some of it centuries old,
and filled with this truth,

We already have what we need,
to live the way we’d like,
All of it can work together,
Family, trees, people,

A lifetime aimed at love.

We can store up what we will need for later,
give everything we have for now,
and make something unexplainable,
but felt,
Forever.
