THE CHAUFFEUR

Woman in uniform leaning on a car that has flags on the front hood.

She joined the MTC,

Mechanised Transport Corps,

And drove his Cadillac staff car.

Acronyms, like emojis, were everywhere.

Why waste time with words,

When we could all be dead tomorrow.

He sat in the backseat,

The weight of the world,

Temporarily suspended,

While she drove him from here to there.

Perhaps, in those few moments,

He would allow himself to feel,

And not focus on the execution of tasks

Driven by the intentions of other men.

Sitting there,

Breathing, smelling, aware of your heart

And it’s tendency to beat in unpredictable ways.

It was unexpected and dizzying.

And there she was, reliable, dependable, insightful,

And unquestionably beautiful.

A reminder of everything good in the world.

A reminder of why,

If only for a moment,

To be free and to know love.
