DAD

He was a magician.
A librarian who could transform a rainy Saturday afternoon in into bliss with our own private movies of the ‘69 Mets.
He was sharp and bright and talked about how he loved the light on the west coast.
He knew history and why it was important.
He loved reading and turned this love into a method and practice for transforming communities and people.
He tried hard to do the right things,
And failed many times just like the rest of us.
But he never stopped trying to be better than he was yesterday.
Once, he told me to stop being so idealistic and then spent the rest of the time talking about his ideas….
He taught me how to be angry which he was not proud of…
He loved sailing and figuring out ways to do things that were in harmony with the way the world actually works.
He hated politics,
But got good enough at them that he could get the things done that he really, really wanted to do.
He taught me to respect what I loved and to pursue it unabashedly.
“Enjoy it” was the catch phrase he used when I suffered thru baseball games I played in and did not do well.
It used to drive me crazy.
I didn’t understand he just hated seeing us in pain
That’s all.
He loved us. Was proud of us. All.
