DO THE RIGHT THING

We try hard to do the right thing
And, even so,
At times, unavoidably
Falling victim
To our preferences.
Which may not always be,
The right thing.
But who knows?
You never really know.
But it sounds good.
So, we hope for the best outcome
And are devastated
When our choices
Result in loss
Someone turning their back on us,
A friend or family member.
How to always stay true
To what we believe
And avoid being alone?
Hold someone close to you
When you are at the apex
Of disagreement
And you will know what I mean.
Learning to be together,
In the middle of our divide,
When I don’t agree with you
About anything!
Is what we are capable of,
When wisdom, patience, kindness
And love prevail.
