DUCKS IN LOVE

On an island in the lake where we walk,
The ducks were fornicating,
Making sure everyone knew what a good time they were having.
There was sun,
And the cool from rain soaked hills and trees around us.
He said,
I believe there is a force that connects us all,
To each other.
Well, of course.
How else would this be possible?
Once a farmer, a roofer, a drummer in a rock band,
Then a soldier in the army walking alongside tanks in the desert.
Now walking here by this lake,
With some kid from Connecticut, son of a librarian,
Who thought getting married and raising a family was the pinnacle of aspiration.
Talking about art and ethics and what they believe in,
Revealing their sins slowly to each other,
So as not to rattle their sense of self.
As if they were one and the same person.
As if they were meant to be together,
Here.
Wondering,
Why can’t everyone see,
This is how things are supposed to be.
