HUMMING BIRD

HUMMING BIRD collecting flower honey

Long ago,
we decided to exchange meaning,
That inarticulated thing that flutters our hearts,
For control.
Leaving behind beauty for utility
We strolled out,
confident we knew something,
For sure.
I am.
Was all we had,
yet it felt good,
to say such a thing with confidence.
Giving up everything
in that exchange.
Our sense of spiritual humility and grace
Set aside for grander things,
We thought.
Now,
we struggle to find our way back
to the moment we watched a humming bird’s wings
or the sun shimmering on water,
making music.
Leaving us silent,
our hearts full of something else.
Wonder at something,
Felt,
not known in that familiar way.
Moving us toward
anywhere.
