LIFE IS NOT ABOUT BEING HAPPY

Life is not about being happy,
Is what she said.
It made me angry.
That’s depression talking,
I thought.
I resisted.
“Then what is it about?”
I asked,
She didn’t have an answer.
But it felt like,
There’s more to it than that,
There’s pain and loss,
Heartache when effort feels futile,
And a deep irreconcilable loneliness.
But there is beauty too,
Moments of sunshine and grace,
Where you see into what seems unfathomable.
Saying, life = happy
Just seemed weak and untrue,
So short of what she wanted me to know.
It was unworthy of a life’s mission,
To know so much more.
