THE DEAL

In 1775,
Having gained insight,
Into the goings on in North America,
And recently completed a revision to,
The Barber of Seville,
He wrote a letter to the King suggesting,
The royal council help the colonists win their freedom.
“Such a nation will be invincible”,
And he relished the idea of a people set free from tyranny.
This would not only help them win their liberation,
It would lessen English power in the world.
The King rejected his proposal,
But sent him to London as a secret agent,
Where he succeeded,
In preventing them from besmirching the name of the King’s mistress.
Emboldened,
He suggested the King give him a million to help the Americans,
And he would do the rest.
This time, the King agreed.
Somehow, he was able to rally the makers of arms and munitions,
And owners of several boats, despite everyone’s questions, arguments, and delays,
And deliver to the Continental Congress,
Enough weaponry to help them win their freedom.
Years later, his daughter, having fallen into poverty,
Petitioned congress for the 2.25 million still owed her father,
To which they replied, “take one third or nothing”
