THE LIABILITY OF ALL THINGS

Interior of a Bookstore

Boxes and boxes of them,
all around,
pulling at us,
all day long.

Things, at one point, we might’ve died for,
Things, we thought,
might make it a little easier to live.

Tug at us
as we seek freedom
from all that has gone on.

If I can just let go,
of this one thing,
then maybe the next one,
will not be so strong.

And I can sit here watching the birds
Scrape at each other
For what I once thought
was mine.
