TRIUMPH OF THE SELFIE

Triumph of the Selfie
Of course, we are obsessed with ourselves,
Words, Videos, Pictures of us all, and those we love, surrounding us
On Facebook, Twitter, Snapchat and the like….
Narcissus happily leading CEOs to the promised land.
A student says to me, “I prefer ‘they’ or ‘their’ instead of he or she”,
And I fail miserably in my attempt to say it right,
While they all do it so gracefully.
Now I am socially inept.
Strangled to death by the possibility of offending those I care about,
Or by the death of language as I once knew it,
Or by the slow unwinding of my brain as it attempts to refer to the singular using what it knows to be plural.
Here we are at the end of democracy, language and everything we thought we knew,
Encapsulated by the ubiquitous, “whatever”.
The individual reigning supreme and run amok,
Where leaders can say…anything
Irrespective of reality, truth or anything associated with them
And we depend on the media to assess their veracity.
Whatever.
Relax my friend says, good is still good,
And a good compass will still point you toward true north.
Where we all end up together in the end.
I hope so.
Does anyone know where I can buy a good compass these days?
