TRUTH AND THE NOT SO MUCH

Back then,
The TV was how everything came in.
The Vietnam war,
Assassinations,
Calls for the draft,
Nuclear proliferation,
Kids disappearing,
The fearful zeitgeist keeping us in check.
Making sure we did the right things,
Ate the right food,
Bought the right stuff,
It was powerful,
News of the world, the truth, and the not so much.
Finding your way, hearing your own voice, amidst all that,
Was tricky.
Finding out who you were,
Independent of fear,
Was daunting.
And yet there it was.
Resist it all. Find your own way.
Venture out beyond the horizons of that creepy reach
Building strength and courage,
Live outside the reach of your fears,
Such that in the end you will be able to say
There, I’ve done what I can do,
I am who I’ve chosen to be and all that goes with that.
