VALENTINE’S DAY 2020

I LOVE YOU

Valentine’s Day
The other day,
I watched you out the window,
While you worked on the hillside,
Pulling weeds, clearing brush, cutting things back,
Dogs stressed to the limit,
Because they could not come to you,
Thru the fence.
There was sunlight
On your hair,
As you stared down,
Considering your next move.
Then me thinking,
How you decorated our porch
Last week.
Painted wood flowers in a vase.
A kerchief as tablecloth.
Some real flowers.
And knowing later,
After that small section of hillside
Was cleared,
How you would speak of aches,
In your back, your hands, your knees, your feet,
And knowing, decidedly,
You would not/will not,
Have it any other way.
The plunging into things
To make them better
Or beautiful.
The faith you have,
In what comes next,
In how it will turn out,
When you set aside comfort
And do what you do
With hope for the future
And love.
