Into words.
Ideas.
Things we made up.
Can you imagine such a thing?
Committing ourselves
To live together,
And work things out,
When things get hard,
In spite of ourselves.
What do you believe in?
What you are willing to fight for?
A flag,
A promise,
A vow.
These are things
That deserve our attention.
The “talk” of meaningful things.
Is there really “truth”
Inside all that,
That is,
You know,
Self-evident?
What does it really take,
To live up to the words
And agreements
We make for and with
Each other.
A strong heart,
A leap of faith,
The ability to listen and think deeply,
And the courage,
To step back into the room,
While you go back over,
Everything,
One more time.
Question everything,
Keep your commitments.
Get out and vote.
Squeeze the people you love.
Keep working at it.
It’s what we’ve got,
For now.
