THE SUNDAY WALK

There was the sun,
Slowly coming up from behind the mountains,
As we trudged up the path,
Wading thru a community of wild turkeys,
A long day of walking ahead of us.
We talked gently of our aches and pains,
Our hope for outcomes,
We were really no longer a part of,
Our desire to help,
Still evident in our words and steps.
There were complaints,
Though mild,
And more intended to compare notes on what ailed us,
As we progressed.
We both felt lucky, grateful really,
To be here, now.
We were satisfied and happy at the top,
For just a bit we felt we had done something,
Perhaps on the boundaries for our age,
And then returned to the truth of needing to return.
We stood and readied ourselves,
To face whatever challenges might remain,
In a world no longer intended for us.
— Many thanks to my friend Barry for joining me on a beautiful, sun-filled 10 mile hike up and down Mt. Diablo.
